Classification: Asterinaceae, Asterinales, Dothideomycetidae, Dothideomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi
Colonies epiphyllous on leaves. Superficial hyphae with intercalary appressoria. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia superficial, blackened, gregarious to solitary, oval to ellipsoidal, X- or Y-shaped, opening by a linear fissure, basal layer poorly developed. Upper wall comprising linear, dark cells, which are branched at the margin. Hamathecium lacking pseudoparaphyses. Asci bitunicate, 8-spored, globose to subglobose, apical region of asci usually with a thick opaque region, fissitunicate dehiscence and ocular chamber not observed. Ascospores, overlapping, 1-septum, oblong to obvoid, initially hyaline becoming brown when mature (Hongsanan et al. 2014a). Asexual morph: Pycnothyria superficial, developing below the superficial hyphae, circular, dimidiate, fringed, brown to dark-brown, with a central ostiole. Conidiogenous cells monoblastic. Conidia 1–2-celled, elongate ellipsoidal, upper end rounded or acuminate, lower end with truncate hilum, septum central or in upper third, initially hyaline becoming brown (Hofmann 2010; Hongsanan et al. 2014a; Firmino et al. 2016; Marasinghe et al. 2022b).
Notes: Cirsosia was established by Arnaud (1918) with the type species C. manaosensis. Species of this genus are characterized by superficial hyphae with intercalary appressoria, the lirelliform or V–Y-shaped ascomata opening by a longitudinal fissure and 1-septum ascospores (Batista and Maia 1960; Bezerra 2004; Hosagoudar 2010). Hongsanan et al. (2014a) re-examined the type species and suggested to place Cirsosia in Asterinaceae. Cirsosia is morphologically similar to Lembosia, however, it is different in having intercalary appressoria (Hongsanan et al. 2020a). Marasinghe et al. (2022b) provided the first molecular data for Cirsosia mangiferae and confirmed the placement of Cirsosia in Lembosiaceae. We follow Marasinghe et al. (2022b) and accept Cirsosia in Lembosiaceae based on available molecular data.
Type species: Cirsosia manaosensis (Henn.) G. Arnaud [as ‘manaoensis’], Annals d’École National d’Agric. de Montpellier, Série 2 16(1–4): 127 (1918) [1917].
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Cirsosia.
