            Lombard et al. (2016) established Brevistachys to accommodate stachybotrys-like taxa that has distinctly short conidiophores and conidiogenous cells occur on conidiophores or directly from vegetative hyphae. The phylogenetic analysis of combined cmdA, ITS, rpb2, tef1 and tub2 loci also supported the placement of Brevistachys apart from Stachybotrys s. str. (Lombard et al. 2016). The species of this genus are associated with various plants (Lombard et al. 2016). Brevistachys is characterized by macronematous mononematous,conidiophores that occur solitary or in groups. They are hyaline or subhyaline, short, erect, unbranched or rarely branched and 1-septate towards the bottom third. Walls are thin- or thick and smooth or verrucose. Sometimes, conidiophores have bulbous apice that produce a whorl of 3–8 conidiogenous cells. Phialidic conidiogenous cells born on the apice or stipe of the conidiophores or directly on vegetative hyphae. They are hyaline to subhyaline, ellipsoidal to subcylindrical to elongate doliiform and, have smooth to verrucose walls and conspicuous collarettes. Hyaline to dark brown conidia aggregate in slimy masses. They are obovoid to globose to ossiform to ellipsoidal and aseptate with smooth to verrucose walls (Lombard et al. 2016). The sexual morph retains undetermined. To date the genus accomodate five species (Index Fungorum 2024).
