Classification: Microthyriaceae, Microthyriales, Incertae sedis, Dothideomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi
Epiphytic on upper surface of leaves appearing as blackened areas. Mycelium superficial, light brown, with lateral, alternate appressoria. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia superficial, orbicular, gregarious, brown to black, with poorly developed basal layer, opening by an irregular central pore at maturity. Upper wall comprising radially closely arranged and peridium with black-brown irregular cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium lacking pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, saccate or globose, fissitunicate, without a distinct ocular chamber and pedicel, slightly bluing in IKI. Ascospores irregularly 3–4-seriate, ellipsoidal, initially hyaline becoming brown at maturity, 1-septum, slightly constricted at the septum, rough-walled. Asexual morph: Undetermined (Wu et al. 2011a; Hongsanan et al. 2014a).
Notes: Batista et al. (1957) introduced Trichopeltospora as a monotypic genus until T. pipericola var. elongata and T. pipericola var. minospora and T. reticulata were added to the genus (Batista et al. 1957; Bezerra and Cavalcante 1967). Wu et al. (2011a) examined the holotype of T. pipericola and placed Trichopeltospora in Asterinaceae based on appressoriate surface mycelium, thyriothecia opening by rupturing of the central upper wall, sub globose asci, and 1-septum, brown ascospores (Hongsanan et al. 2020a).
Type species: Trichopeltospora pipericola Bat. et al., inBatista et al., Publicação do Instituto de Micologia, Universidade de Recife 90: 17 (1958) [1957].
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Trichopeltospora.
