Classification: Teratosphaeriaceae, Mycosphaerellales, Dothideomycetidae, Dothideomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.

Based on phylogenies of ITS, LSU, RPB2, TEF-1α and BUT sequences, Quaedvlieg et al. (2014) introduced Teratosphaeriopsis as a monotypic genus within Teratosphaeriaceae, Mycosphaerellales in Dothideomycetes with type species Teratosphaeriopsis pseudoafricana. Teratosphaeriopsis pseudoafricana was originally identified as Amycosphaerella africana (= Mycosphaerella africana) based on morphology (Crous & Wingfield 1996). Teratosphaeriopsis pseudoafricana isolated as foliicolous and plant pathogenic. Morphologically, Teratosphaeriopsis species similar to Teratosphaeria sensu stricto but can only be distinguished via phylogenetic data (Wijayawardene et al. 2014). Teratosphaeriopsis is characterized by black ascomata, erumpent, globose, solitary or in clusters of up to three, with papillate apex and central ostiole; wall consisting of 2–3 layers of medium brown textura angularis; obovoid to broadly ellipsoid asci, aparaphysate, fasciculate, subsessile, bitunicate, 8-spored, straight to slightly incurved; obovoid with rounded ends ascospores with tri- to multiseriate, hyaline, medianly 1-septate, slightly constricted at the septum, straight to slightly curved, guttulate, thin-walled, widest in middle of apical cell; ascospores are brown and verruculose at germination (Quaedvlieg et al. 2014). No further species have been introduced to this genus, which remains monotypic.

Type species: Teratosphaeriopsis pseudoafricana Quaedvl. & Crous

Other accepted species: This genus is monotypic.
