Classification:  AsterinaceaeAsterinalesDothideomycetidaeDothideomycetesPezizomycotinaAscomycota, Fungi

Epiphytic on leaves appearing as very small scattered, blackened areas. Superficial hyphae, slightly undulating, branching unilateral, alternate or opposite, brown to dark brown, lacking or with appressoria with epidermal hypostroma. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia superficial, flattened, dark brown to black, opening by central stellate fissures, basal peridium poorly developed, fringed at margins. Upper wall comprising of linear cells arranged radially from the centre toward the margin. Hamathecium lacking pseudoparaphyses or sometimes interascal tissue with filamentous, septate originating from ascogenous hyphae present (reported from Hofmann 2010). Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, globose-subglobose, apedicellate, ocular chamber not present. Ascospores overlapping 3–5-seriate, 1-septum, ellipsoidal with rounded ends, constricted at the septum, initially light brown becoming to reddish-brown. Asexual morph: “Leprieurina”, coelomyceteous, pycnothyria circular, dimidiate, dark brown to blackened, opening with central star-shaped fissures, similar to sexual morph. Conidia obovoid, brown to dark brown, sometimes 1-septum at lower cell, not constricted at the septum, widest near the apex and tapering towards lower end (Hofmann 2010; Hongsanan et al. 2014a).

Note: Arnaud (1918) introduced Prillieuxina based on P. winteriana (Asterina winteriana). It is characterized by sub straight, branched mycelium lacking appressoria, orbicular thyriothecia with 1-septum brown ascospores (Hongsanan et al. 2014a). Prillieuxina is morphologically similar to Asterina in having an orbicular thyriothecia opening by star-like fissures when mature, globose to subglobose asci and 1-septum, brown ascospores (Hongsanan et al. 2014a). However, this genus usually lacks appressoria and the cell arrangement of the upper wall is different from Asterina and similar to Microthyrium. Hongsanan et al. (2014a) re-examined the herbarium specimen of P. winteriana (BPI 690983) and accepted this genus in Asterinaceae. Guatimosim et al. (2015) provided the first molecular data of P. baccharidincola for this genus. Hongsanan et al. (2014a) re-examined the asexual morph of Prillieuxina and provided updated illustrations and descriptions. It is characterized by dimidiate, dark brown pycnothyria with obovoid, brown to dark brown and 1-septum conidia (Hongsanan et al. 2014a).

Type species: Prillieuxina winteriana (Pazschke) G. Arnaud, Annals d’École National d’Agric. de Montpellier, Série 2 16(1–4): 162 (1918) [1917].

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Prillieuxina.
