Classification: Asterinaceae, Asterinales, Dothideomycetidae, Dothideomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi 

Epiphytic or parasitic on leaves, appearing as blackened circles or irregular areas. Superficial hyphae not observed. Sexual morph: Ascostromata superficial or slightly erumpent on host, scattered or gregarious, carbonaceous, pulvinate and raised, multi-loculate, penetrating cells at host stomata, carbonaceous. Locules erumpent, opening with a pore at the centre. Peridium comprising thick-walled, dark brown to black-walled cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium lacking pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, fissitunicate, bitunicate, ovoid, apedicellate or short pedicellate, apically rounded with a very thick opaque region, lacking ocular chamber. Ascospores overlapping bi-seriate or tri-seriate, ellipsoid to fusoid, 2-layered, hyaline, 1-septum, constricted at septum, upper cell slightly broader than the lower cell, slightly verrucose. Asexual morph: Undetermined (Hongsanan et al. 2014a). with small, solitary, subglobose locules, lacking pseudoparaphyses, ovoid asci and ellipsoid to fusoid ascospores with one septum (Hongsanan et al. 2014a). Müller and von Arx (1962) introduced Placoasterella baileyi and placed it in Asterinaceae.

Note: Theissen and Sydow (1915) introduced Placoasterella with the type species of
P. schweinfurthii recorded from the leaves of Dracaena. Placoasterella is characterized by superficial, circular, flat, black, carbonaceous ascomata
