Classification: Collemataceae, Peltigerales, Lecanoromycetidae, Lecanoromycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi
Based on morphology and phylogenetic analysis of LSU, SSU, MCM7 and TUB, Paracollema was introduced by Otálora et al. (2014) as a monotypic genus within Lecanoraceae to accommodate the type species P. italicum, and P. almbornii which were basionymized from Collema (Otálora et al. 2014). Currently, only two species were accepted in Paracollema, which were collected from lichens in Croatia, France, Italy, Montenegro, Portugal, South Africa and Spain (Otálora et al. 2014). Paracollema is mainly characterized by foliose, small, homoiomerous, dark olive green to brownish thallus, small, entire and rounded lobes, surface smooth or slightly wrinkled, numerous, laminal, sessile apothecia, plane to convex, dark red disc, very small 8-spored asci, small, narrowly ellipsoid or suboblong, 2-celled ascospores, and present pycnidia (Otálora et al. 2014). Paracollema is distinguished from other Collemataceae species by its very small asci and spores (Otálora et al. 2014). Paracollema can be distinguished from other genera based on its morphology and phylogeny.
Type species: Paracollema italicum (B. de Lesd.) Otálora, P.M. Jørg. & Wedin
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Paracollema
