Based on morphological and phylogenetic analysis of ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB1 and RPB2, Palicella was introduced by Flakus and Printzen (2014) as a monotypic genus within Lecanoraceae to accommodate the type species Palicella glaucopa and included another two species in this genus; P. filamentosa and P. schizochromatica. Rodriguez-Flakus (2018) introduced P. lueckingii as another species in this genus and subsequently another two new species (P. anakeestiicola and P. xantholeuca were introduced by Fryday et al. (2019) and Kondratyuk et al. (2019) from genera Lecanora and Lecidea respectively. Currently, six species were accepted in this genus, which were collected from wood and lichens in Austria, Argentina, Canada, Chile, Finland, France, Germany, Malvinas, Norway, Poland, South America, Spain, Sweden, UK, USA and Antarctica (Flakus & Printzen 2014, Rodriguez-Flakus 2018, Fryday et al. 2019, Kondratyuk et al. 2019). This genus is mainly characterized by scrustose, rimose-areolate, partially continuous thallus, apothecia variable in color, wide axial body, tholus I+ blue, 8-spored asci, and narrowly to ellipsoid, colorless, simple, or rarely, 1-septate ascospores (Flakus & Printzen 2014). Morphologically, Palicella is similar to Ramboldia elabens in having apothecia with concolorous margins, as well as a biatorine exciple and narrowly ellipsoid ascospores, however, its different by the latter having typical Lecanora-type asci (tholus with a strongly amyloid lateral part, and broad, apically diverging non-amyloid axial body), pale orange pigments inside the exciple (K–), hypothecial granules (K+ purple) and a lack of atranorin (Hafellner 1993, Kalb et al. 2008, Elix 2009, Flakus & Printzen 2014). Palicella can be distinguished from other genera based on its morphology and phylogeny.
