Doweld (2014) erected Myiophagaceae [as ‘Miyophagaceae’] to accommodate Myiophagus. Species have been described as parasitic in the Coleoptera, Diptera, Homoptera, and Coccoideae. The holocarpic, initially coenocytic, then constricted segments of the thallus endobiotic give rise to intermediate sterile cells and zoosporangia, which eventually disintegrate as the thallus matures. Inoperculate zoosporangia with one or few papillae (Doweld 2014). Zoospores have a single lipid globule, a unique nuclear cap, orange-yellow granules at the anterior of the cell, and they are posteriorly uniflagellate and fusiform to guttate. The globose, thick two-layered resting spores are reticulate and act as prosporangia when they germinate, generating a thin-walled endosporangium (Doweld 2014).

Type genus: Myiophagus Thaxt. ex Sparrow

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Myiophagaceae

Figure 1 – Myiophagus ucrainicus. a Ellipsoidal or very rarely spherical sac. b, c An examination of pulverized complex shows it to be made up largely of thousands of beautifully reticulated resting spores. Cracked open and there was extruded a spherical vesicular body. e, h Prominent papillae were formed on the surface of the wall. f, g Zoospores. Redrawn from Sparrow (1939).
