Massalongina, a poorly studied genus, was proposed by Bubák (1916) to accommodate a new combination, Massalongina aquilina (Bas. Leptostromella aquilina), which occurred on the rachis and fronds of Pteris aquilina in Italy. The genus is monotypic containing a single species, Massalongina aquilina characterized by polystomatous, dimidiato-scutelliform perithecium, oblongish, applanate hypodermis, parietal membranacea, oblong to fusoid, hyaline spores, and bacillary sporophore (Massalongo 1889; Bubák 1916). Currently, Massalongina is placed in Ascomycota genera incertae sedis (Wijayawardene et al. 2022Hyde et al. 2024c). Furthermore, this species was reported without any photoplates (Massalongo 1889; Bubák 1916). Therefore, the type species, M. aquilina needs to be restudied and re-analyzed with fresh collections and isolations, epitypified, and subjected to phylogenetic analysis, and the morphology should be documented with color photoplates.

Type species: Massalongina aquilina (C. Massal.) Bubák.

Leptostromella aquilina C. Massal.

Phomopsis aquilina (C. Massal.) Petr.

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Massalongina.
