Classification: Teloschistaceae, Teloschistales, Lecanoromycetidae, Lecanoromycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
Based on phylogenies of multi-gene (ITS, LSU, and mtSSU) sequence analyses, Kondratyuk et al. (2014) proposed Igneoplaca as a monotypic genus within the subfamily Xanthorioideae in Teloschistaceae, Teloschistales in Lecanoromycetes, with the type species of Igneoplaca ignea. To date, the genus is the only known species (I. ignea), which was from North America on acidic rock in open sunny areas (Kondratyuk et al. 2014). The type species was initially described as Caloplaca ignea (Arup 1995). Igneoplaca, similar to Caloplaca, can differ by the prosoplectenchymatous medulla. Igneoplaca is characterized by thallus crustose, lobate, smooth, red to orange; hypothallus not developed; cortical layer paraplectenchymatous, medulla prosoplectenchymatous. Apothecia are lecanorine; both thalline and true exciple paraplectenchymatous; 8-spored asci, and polarilocular ascospores. Thallus and apothecia K+ purple; constituents: anthraquinones of the parietin biosynthesis (Kondratyuk et al. 2014).
Type species: Igneoplaca ignea (Arup) S.Y. Kondr., Kärnefelt, Elix, Thell & J.S. Hur
Other accepted species: This genus is monotypic.
