Parasitic on leaves. Colonies epiphyllous, superficial, confluent to aggregate, irregular to sub circular even irregular in circumference. Sexual morph: Ascomata black to brown, flattened, orbicular to suborbicular, coriaceous to membranous, opening by irregular fissures, with multi locules, membranous, leathery and upper wall comprising several black layers, ostiolate, inner stroma present. NotesHysterostomella was introduced by Spegazzini (1885) and typified by
H. guaranitica Speg. It is characterized by large, black, circular or elliptical ascomata becoming irregular and rather flat, opening by irregular slits, cylindrical clavate asci and dark brown, ellipsoidal ascospores with a single septum (Inácio and Cannon 2008). Theissen and Sydow (1915) introduced Hysterostomina which resembles Hysterostomella and later Theissen & Doidge (1948) synonymized Hysterostomina under Hysterostomella.

Type species: Hysterostomella guaranitica Speg., Anal. Soc. cient. argent. 19(6): 260 (1885)
