Petrak (1923) established the monotypic genus Hysteropeltella, typified by H. moravica which was collected on Aspidium filix–mas. The genus contains a single species, Hysteropeltella moravica, known from eight collections related to pteridophytes. All known specimens are from the sexual morph, characterized by elongate apothecial, elongate ellipsoidal ascomata with longitudinal slit-like openings, a thin peridium composed of pseudoparenchymatous cells, bitunicate, fissitunicate asci with a blue plane apical reaction using Melzer’s reagent, and clavate-oblong to fusoid, or ellipsoidal ascospores surrounded by a thin, distinct mucilaginous sheath (Petrak 1923; Holm and Holm 1978; Ariyawansa et al. 2013). The taxonomic placement of Hysteropeltella moravica has long been uncertain. It has been placed in discomycetes due to its hysterothecial morphology and the presence of a longitudinal slit (Holm and Holm 1978), or Dothideomycetes, genera incertae sedis (Lumbsch and Huhndorf 2010). Ariyawansa et al. (2013) re-examined the type material of Hysteropeltella, and transferred this genus to Schizothyriaceae based on its discoid ascomata, composed of isodiametrical or radiating cells. However, Phookamsak et al. (2016) tentatively accepted Hysteropeltella in Patellariaceae where it is presently placed (Hyde et al. 2024c) based on the elongated apothecial or hypothecia-like ascomata, advocating new collections with molecular data to confirm its placement.
Type species: Hysteropeltella moravica Petr.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Hysteropeltella.
