Based on morphology and single gene phylogeny analysis of ITS, LSU, and SSU, Kondratyuk et al. (2014) introduced Elenkiniana to accommodate the type species Elenkiniana gloriae (basionym: Caloplaca gloriae), Elenkiniana ehrenbergii (basionym: Amphiloma ehrenbergii), and Elenkiniana gomerana (basionym: Caloplaca gomerana). Elenkiniana is mainly characterized by a lobate, yellow to orange thallus, with pseudocyphellae, cortical layer paraplectenchymatous, true exciple often indistinct, lecanorine apothecia, 8-spored asci, polarilocular ascospores, and bacilliform to narrowly bacilliform conidia (Kondratyuk et al. 2014). Morphologically, Elenkiniana is similar to Gyalolechia, but differs in lobate thalli, laminal pseudocyphellae, lack of numerous crystals in the cortical layer, and lack of granular inclusions in the hymenium (Kondratyuk et al. 2014). Elenkiniana species occur in Eurasia (Cabo Verde, Egypt, Israel, Morocco, Palestine, Spain) (Kondratyuk et al. 2014, GBIF 2024). Elenkiniana can be distinguished from other genera based on morphology and phylogeny.
Type species: Elenkiniana gloriae (Llimona & Werner) S.Y. Kondr., Kärnefelt, A. Thell, Elix, J. Kim, A.S. Kondr. & Hur
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Elenkiniana
