Collonies epiphyllous, appearing as large blackened circular areas. Superficial mycelium with brown to dark brown hyphae and appressoria absent. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia superficial, solitary or gregarious, erumpent from black mycelia mass, globose to subglobose, membraneous to carbonaceous. Peridium comprising 2-layers, dark brown to hyaline, cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium composed of filiform pseudoparaphyses with pigmented tips. Asci 4–8-spored, oblong or subglobose, bitunicate, fissitunicate, short pedicellate, or apedicellate with thick opaque region and ocular chamber in apical region. Ascospores overlapping, 2-seriate, hyaline, ellipsoid to fusoid, 1-septum, broader upper cell and narrower lower cell with verruculose wall (Hongsanan et al. 2014a; Pem et al. 2019). Asexual morph: Undetermined.
Notes: Höhnel (1910) established Dothidasteromella to accommodate D. sepulta as the type species. Von Arx and Müller (1975) placed this genus in Asterinaceae based on subcuticular hypostromata, superficial hyphae, globose to subglobose thyriothecia with 1-septum asospores (Fig. 1) (Pem et al. 2019). However, Dothidasteromella is distinct from Asterina in having carbonaceous thyriothecia, hyphae lacking appressoria and hyaline ascospores. Therefore, we treated this genus in Asterinales genera incertae sedis until further deep taxonomic studies with molecular data.
Type species: Dothidasteromella sepulta (Berk. & M.A. Curtis) Höhn., Sber. Akad. Wiss. Wien, Math.naturw. Kl., Abt. 1 119: 421 [29 repr.] (1910).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Dothidasteromella.
