The new genus Charcotiana was introduced by Søchting et al. (2014) along with another new genus (Amundsenia). Charcotiana antarctica is the type of species of this genus which found from continental Antarctica (Søchting et al. 2014). While, this genus was recognized based on the morphological, chemistry (chemosyndrome), and molecular works (ITS, LSU, mtSSU) (Søchting et al. 2014). Charcotiana is similar in main morphology, anatomy and chemistry to several other crustose genera in the subfamily but can defined by molecular phylogenetic (Søchting et al. 2014). This genus is characterized by having saxicolous thallus, crustose, areolate, orange; sparse or abundant apothecia, zeorine with orange disc; polardiblastic spores while apothecia and thalli contain parietin (dominant) and small proportions of teloschistin, fallacinal, parietinic acid and emodin (Chemosyndrome A of Søchting (1997) (Søchting et al. 2014). Only one species (C. antarctica) has been accepted in this genus.
Type species: Charcotiana antarctica Søchting, Garrido-Ben., Pérez-Ort., Seppelt & Castello
Other accepted species: This genus is monotypic.
