Catenomycetales was introduced by Doweld (2014). The order is characterized by a unique morphology with polycentric to rarely monocentric thalli, diffusely organized, branched or unbranched, septate, tubular isthmuses between the sporangia, and numerous fine sterile rhizoids with intercalary zoosporangia. Sporangia with strongly developed endooperculal discharge tubes Zoospores are spherical and have multiple golden lipid globules and are posteriorly uniflagellate (Doweld 2014).
