Höhnel (1909) introduced Capnodiaceae and later, Theissen (1916) validated the family by designating generic type as Capnodium. Batista and Ciferri (1963b) included 40 genera in Capnodiaceae. Later, Luttrell (1973) and von Arx and Muller (1975) accepted 17 genera (Hughes 1976). Kirk et al. (2008) included 26 genera, while Crous et al. (2009) placed three genera in Capnodiaceae based on phylogeny. Later, Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010) accepted 13 genera. Chomnunti et al. (20112014) re-examined type specimens and accepted only six genera. Ariyawansa et al. (2015) introduced Chaetocapnodium to this family based on morphology and phylogeny. Bose et al. (2014) synonymized Phragmocapnias under Conidiocarpus and Abdollahzadeh et al. (2020) accepted both as separate genera based on molecular data. Hongsanan et al. (2020b) accepted nine genera (Chaetocapnodium, Capnodium, Conidiocarpus, Fumiglobus, Leptoxyphium, Limaciniaseta, Readerielliopsis, Scoriadopsis and Scorias) in Capnodiaceae. Abdollahzadeh et al. (2020) accepted seven genera (Capnodium, Cheatocapnodium, Conidiocarpus, Heterconium, Leptoxyphium, Phragmocapnias and Polychaeton) and excluded Fumiglobus, Limaciniaseta, Readerielliopsis, Scoriadopsis, and Scorias based on molecular data. Recommended genetic markers for Capnodiaceae (species level) are LSU and ITS (Jayawardena et al. 2019).

Type genus: Capnodium Mont. [as ‘Capnodio’], Annls Sci. Nat., Bot., sér. 3 11: 233 (1849)
