Biotrophic on the surface of leaves. Superficial mycelium composing of hyphae with appressoria. Sexual morph: Thryriothecia superficial, circular, flattened, coriaceous, opening by splitting or cracking to form a pore. Upper wall comprising rows of cells, radiating from the central opening to the periphery with poorly developed basal layer. Hamathecium with septate, branched, hyaline pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, broadly cylindrical without pedicel. Ascospores overlapping 2–3-seriate, light-brown to hyaline, 1-septum, constricted at the septum, the rough- walled upper cell wider than the smooth-walled lower cell. Asexual morph: Undetermined (Wu et al. 2014). hyphae with appresssoria and the morphology of thyriothecia resembles Asterinaceae (Hofmann 2010; Hongsanan et al. 2014a; Wu et al. 2014). Asterinella also resembles Maublancia species by having brown surface mycelia, thyriothecia with elongated asci which inclined towards a central column of sterile pseudoparaphyses (Hofmann 2010). However, Maublancia has surface mycelia with appressoria, while Asterinella lacks appressoriate surface mycelia (Arnaud 1918). The asexual morph of Asterinella has not been recorded (Wu et al. 2014).
Notes: Asterinella was introduced by Theissen (1921) typified by A. puiggarii as the type species. Müller and von Arx (1962) and Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010) included Asterinella in Microthyriaceae. However, the superficial
Type species: Asterinella puiggarii (Speg.) Theiss., Broté- ria, sér. bot. 10(2): 116 (1912).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Asterinella.
