Woronichin (1925) established Antennulariellaceae as the generic type of Antennulariella. Woronichin (1925) mentioned that Antennulariellaceae differs from Capnodiaceae and Coccodiniaceae in having completely closed ascomata similar to Perisporiaceae and the mycelium and the conidial forms similar to Eucapnodiaceae. Kirk et al. (2008) included six genera and Hyde et al. (2013), Chomnunti et al. (2014) and Wijayawardene et al. (2017a) accepted three genera Antennulariella, Achaetobotrys and Capnofrasera. Later, Wijayawardene et al. (2017b) excluded Capnofrasera and Capnodendron based on the morphology of its asexual morph. Pem et al. (2019) included Eumela in this family based on the morphology of ascomata, asci and hamathecium. This taxonomic treatment was accepted by Hongsanan et al. (2020b). There is little sequence data available for Antennulariaceae and more molecular data are needed to confirm the placement in Capnodiales.

Type genus: Antennulariella Woron., Trudy Byuro Prikl. Bot. 8(6): 771 (1915).
