Anacraspedodidymum was established by Silva et al. (2014), with Anacraspedodidymum aquaticum designated as its type species. They introduced this genus based on morphological characteristics and proposed a new combination, Anacraspedodidymum hyalosporum, to accommodate a species previously known as Craspedodidymum hyalosporum. Zheng et al. (2021) introduced Anacraspedodidymum submersum, which is morphologically similar to A. aquaticum and A. hyalosporum, during a mycological survey of freshwater hyphomycetes on submerged leaves in southwest China. Based on these morphological features, Zheng et al. (2021) placed this species within Anacraspedodidymum. Anacraspedodidymum is characterized by unbranched and septate conidiophores, monophialidic, cylindrical conidiogenous cells with a funnel-shaped collarette, and solitary, hyaline conidia. The sexual morph stage of Anacraspedodidymum species is unknown. These species are typically associated with submerged leaves or litter, as has been reported by Silva et al. (2014) and Zheng et al. (2021). Bayesian analysis of combined ITS and LSU sequences grouped Anacraspedodidymum submersum with the Thozetella genus clade, although the two are morphologically distinct according to Zheng et al. (2021). While Silva et al. (2014) noted that Anacraspedodidymum has some morphological similarities to the genus Bahusutrabeeja, Zheng et al. (2021) found Bahusutrabeeja to be phylogenetically distant from A. submersum. Based on their morphological and phylogenetic analyses, Zheng et al. (2021) placed Anacraspedodidymum within Chaetosphaeriaceae (Chaetosphaeriales). Currently, Anacraspedodidymum comprises three species. However, its taxonomic placement within a specific family and order remains unconfirmed because of the lack of sequence data. Consequently, Wijayawardene et al. (2022) classified Anacraspedodidymum as an Ascomycota genus incertae sedis, indicating its uncertain position within fungal taxonomy.
