Based on both ITS and LSU phylogenies, Lachnopsis was established by Guatimosim et al. (2016b) for two lachnum-like taxa, namely Lachnopsis catarinensis (the type species) and L. dicksoniae Guatim., R.W. Barreto & Crous. These two species were found on frond blight in Brazil (Guatimosim et al. 2016b). Lachnopsis species are known only from its sexual morphs, which are characterized by unique host preferences on ferns, and having apothecial, superficial ascomata clothed with hairs, cylindrical asci with euamyloid pores, and fusoid or filiform, hyaline ascospores (Guatimosim et al. 2016b). Lachnopsis has typical characteristics of Lachnum s.l and is difficult to distinguish from Lachnum s.l. using morphology, but it can be differentiated based on molecular data (ITS, LSU and SSU). Guatimosim et al. (2016b) also pointed out that two fungi (Lachnopsis cf. varians TNS-F-17631 and Lachnopsis cf. pteridophylli SAC PR148) widely distributed on tropical ferns may be additional members of Lachnopsis (Haines 1980; Spooner 1987). These two species need to be recollected, sequenced and epitypified in order to confirm their phylogenetic status (TNS-F-17631 and SAC PR148). The genus is placed in Lachnaceae, Helotiales, Leotiomycetes, Ascomycota (Hyde et al. 2024c).
Type species: Lachnopsis catarinensis Guatimosim, R.W. Barreto & Crous.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Lachnopsis.
