Classification: Fungi Incertae sedis, Amerosporae.
The monotypic fossil genus, Exesisporites, was described from the Northern Gulf of Mexico’s Miocene-Pleistocene (23–2 mya) sediments (Elsik 1969). This genus is characterized by unicellular, aseptate, psilate, and monoporate spores with a circular outline and a lenticular to spherical shape. It has a centrally located pore, which in most specimens is surrounded by a dark circular patch that is interpreted as a thickened wall.
Type species: Exesisporites neogenicus Elsik.
