Parasitic on leaves. Superficial hyphae lacking. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial, circular, dark brown to black, slightly, carbonaceous, scattered, circularly arranged, appearing as black circular patches easily separated from the host surface, several concentric ring-shaped loculi. Hamathecium lacking pseudoparaphyses or evanescent. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, clavate to ovate with or without pedicel. Ascospores 2–3-seriate, conglobate to ellipsoidal, 1-septum or aseptate, pale yellow to dark brown at apex, slightly constricted at the septum, covering thin sheath. Asexual morph: Conidia hyaline, unicellular, rod-shaped (Theissen and Sydow 1915).

Notes: Polycyclina was introduced by Theissen and Sydow (1915) to accommodate Polycyclina rhytismoides. This genus was recorded as pathogenic on living leaves of Lomaria imperalis. Polycyclina is characterized by solitary, superficial, circular to elliptical to irregular, disc-like, black, rather flat ascomata, clavate to cylindric-clavate asci and ellipsoid to cylindric-ellipsoid, dark brown, aseptate ascospores (Hongsanan et al. 2020a).
