Classification: AsterinaceaeAsterinalesDothideomycetidaeDothideomycetesPezizomycotinaAscomycota, Fungi

Epiphytic on the surface of leaves. Superficial hyphae light brown, reticulate, septate with 2-celled narrowly ovate lateral appressoria. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia superficial, orbicular, flattened, scattered, dark brown to black, glabrous, with poorly developed basal cell layer, opening by huge irregular fissure when mature. Upper wall composed of dark brown to brown filaments at the outer rim, which radiate towards the rim. Hamathecium comprising of hyaline, septate, simple or branched filiform pseudoparaphyses. Asci 4–8-spored, bitunicate, oblong, not staining blue in IKI, apedicellate and ocular chamber not observed. Ascospores fasciculate, cylindrical, hyaline to brown, 1–4-septate or 3-transversely septate, constricted at the septa, with upper cell larger and broadly rounded. Asexual morph: Undetermined (Batista 1960; Hongsanan et al. 2014a).

Notes: Batista (1960) introduced Parasterinopsis to accommodate Patouillardina sersalisiae which remained monotypic until two species, P. caesalpiniae and P. orchidacearum were added by Batista et al. (1963). Parasterinopsis resembles Asterinaceae in having appressoriate superficial hyphae, and thyriothecium opening by an irregular fissure (Hongsanan et al. 2020a). However, its cylindrical, 1–4-septate or 3-transversly septate ascospores differ from the ascospores in other genera in Asterinaceae (Fig. 1) (Hongsanan et al. 2014a). Herein, we placed this genus in Asterinales incertae sedis due to its distinct morphology until confirm with molecular data.

Type species: Parasterinopsis sersalisiae (Hansf.) Bat., Atas Inst. Micol. Univ. Recife 1: 327 (1960).

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Parasterinopsis.
