Colonies epiphyllous, appearing as blackened dots on leaf surfaces. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial to erumpent, blackened, solitary to aggregate, circular to irregular oblong to lobate when mature, periphysate. Hamathecium consists of pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, hyaline, cylindrical-clavate. Ascospores short and broadly clavate, brown, upper cell larger than lower cell, smooth-walled. Notes: Theissen and Sydow (1915) established Pachypatella typifying P. alsophilae as the type species. Pachypatella is characterized by superficial, circular or elliptical, flat ascomata, becoming irregular in shape, with clavate, or cylindrical to cylindric-clavate asci and cylindric-ellipsoidal to ellipsoidal or occasionally oblong ascospores (Inácio and Cannon 2008).
Type species: Pachypatella alsophilae (Racib.) Theiss. & Syd., Annls mycol. 13(3/4): 228 (1915).
≡ Hysterostomella alsophilae Racib., Parasit. Alg. Pilze Java’s (Jakarta) 2: 22 (1900).
Other accepted species: species Fungorum – search Pachypatella.
