Index Fungorum, Facesoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank.

Classification: Parmulariaceae, Asterinales, Dothideomycetidae, Dothideomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi

Epiphytic and parasitic on leaves. Sexual morph: Ascos- tromata gregarious to solitary superficial, shield-like, dark brown to black, coriaceous, flattened, smooth ascomatal margins, connected to internal stroma by hyphal tubes or clusters. Internal stroma well-developed, with ridges radiating from the centre to the outer rim, ridges containing elongate locules, opening by a longitudinal slit, thick-walled, elongated and composed of black, amorphous tissues in the stromatic crust. Hamathecium comprising of hyaline, cellular, branched or unbranched, septate pseu- doparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, cylindrical to clavate, thick-walled, sessile or short-pedicellate, with a distinct ocular chamber, thickened at the apex. Ascospores 2–3-seriate, 1-septum, ellipsoidal or ovate-oblong, with rounded ends, hyaline to brown, constricted at the septum, obtuse on both sides, smooth-walled (Jayasiri et al. 2016). Asexual morph: Undetermined.

Notes: Saccardo (1889) established Cocconia with the type species of Cocconia placenta which was previously introduced as Rhytisma placenta. Cocconia is characterized by superficial, shield-like, dark brown to black, carbonaceous, flated ascomata producing thick-walled, cylindrical to cylindrical clavate asci and ellipsoidal, 1-septum, brown ascospores (Jayasiri et al. 2016). It morphologically resembles Parmulariaceae by the superficial, flattened, shield-like, carbonaceous ascomata with ridges radiating from the centre to the outer rim (Jayasiri et al. 2016; Hongsanan et al. 2020a).

Type species: Cocconia placenta (Berk. & Broome) Sacc., Syll. fung. (Abellini) 8: 738 (1889)

Other accepted species: species Fungorum – search Cocconia.

Rhytisma placenta Berk. & Broome, J. Linn. Soc., Bot. 14(no. 74): 131 (1873) [1875]
