Hansford (1946) established Asterinaceae with the type genus Asterina in Microthyriales. Species of this family usually are biotrophic and abundant in tropical and subtropical regions. They are characterized by having thyriothecia comprising upper walls with radiating cells, with star-like or longitudinal silt and dark brown hyphae with appressoria (Hofmann 2010; Hongsanan et al. 2014a). Hongsanan et al. (2020a) accepted 19 genera and Wijayawardene et al. (2022) accepted 18 genera excluding Pycnocarpon. Herein, we accept 11 genera (Asterina, Asterinella, Bastinula, Gangamycea, Halbania, Meliolaster, Prillieuxina, Platypeltella, Pycnocarpon, Trichasterina and Trichopeltospora). We excluded Cirsosia and Echidnodella from Asterinaceae and placed them in Lembosiaceae while we treat Asterostomella as the asexual morph of Asterina. We transfer Dothidasteromella, Parasterinopsis, Schenckiella and Uleothyrium from Asterinaceae to Asterinales incertae sedis. In addition, we accept Calothyriopsis, Caribaeomyces, Caudella and Discopycnothyrium in Asterinales incertae sedis based on morphology and following Hongsanan et al. (2020a).
Type genus: Asterina Lév., Annls Sci. Nat., Bot., sér. 3 3: 59 (1845).
