Barbatosporaceae was introduced by Doweld (2014) to accommodate the monotypic genus Barbatospora. The family is characterized by thalli branched, developing cylindrical trichospores that lack a collar with multiple thin appendages at the base, while at the apical end of trichospores with or without a sheathing tube and later some opening appendicular filaments by dehiscence (White et al. 2006). There is only one species, Barbatospora ambicaudata, belonging to the monotype genus Barbatospora in Barbatosporales (Wijayawardene et al. 2022).
Type genus: Barbatospora M.M. White, Siri & Lichtw
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Barbatosporaceae
