Vigneronia was introduced as a new genus within Roccellaceae, Arthoniales, in Arthoniomycetes by Ertz et al. (2015), with the type species V. spieri. The species was initially described as Schismatomma spieri by Aptroot and Sparrius (2008). Morphologically, Vigneronia species reminiscent of Lecanactis, with Lecanactis-type asci and ascospores, but with lirellate ascomata somewhat resembling those of Lecanographa, and Vigneronia formed a separate branch with Crocellina and Schismatomma. The type species of Vigneronia was described in the genus Schismatomma (Ertz et al. 2015). Besides, based on the morphology, Ertz et al. (2015) also moved two Opegrapha species in Vigneronia and named as V. cypressi and V. robustula. Later, Vigneronia mexicana and V. caceresiana were described by Herrera-Campos et al. (2019), as they are morphologically consistent with Vigneronia. Currently, five Vigneronia species have been recorded in the Index Fungorum (2024) and are known to be lichenized fungi (Ertz et al. 2015de los Ángeles Herrera-Campos et al. 2019). Vigneronia is characterized by thallus crustose, non-corticate, thin, smooth, continuous to finely cracked, white, dull grey or pinkish, matt, elongate and lirelliform ascomata, often strongly flexuose, rarely oblong, immersed or semi-immersed to sessile, margins black, hymenial disc slit-like or quite widely exposed, pale to dark brown, brown to black excipulum, K+ slightly olivaceous, closed or widely opened at the base of the apothecium, pale to dark brown hypothecium, K+ olivaceous, hyaline hymenium, I+ blue, then with some parts turning orange-red and K/I+ blue, branched and anastomosing paraphysoids, clavate to cylindrical asci with fusiform ascospores, straight or curved, 3-septate, pycnidia immersed in the thallus, visible as blackish dots,   conidia hyaline and curved (Ertz et al. 2015Herrera-Campos. et al. 2019).

Type species: Vigneronia spieri (Aptroot & Sparrius) Ertz & Bungartz
