Classification: Pannariaceae, Peltigerales, Lecanoromycetidae, Lecanoromycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
Based on phylogenetic analyses, Ekman et al. (2014) identified Pectenia spp. based on sect. Amphiloma and P. plumbea was the type species. Pectenia usually carry lichenic substances, which are characterized by blue-grey, thick and rigid, placodioid, orbicular thallus, blue-black, thick, feltlike hypothallus, biatorine apothecia laminal with brown disc and a pale rim, the uppermost part is brown pigment and other part colorless hymenium, clavate to cylindrical asci with an apical dark-amyloid plug, colorless, smooth wall ascospores (Ekman et al. 2014). Four species were included within Pectenia viz: P. atlantica, P. cyanoloma, P. ligulata, and P. plumbea. They are distributed in the Atlantic-Mediterranean part of Europe (mainly along the Atlantic coast) in Ireland, France, Portugal, and Great Britain, whereas P. plumbea was also found in North-East America (Richardson et al. 2010, Ekman et al. 2014). Recently, this genus was placed under Nom. illegit., Art. 52.1 deals with the type of a name (Amphiloma (Fr.) Körb. 1855), which ought to have been adopted as published as ‘nom. et stat. nov.’ but ‘replaced the synonym’ (Parmelia sect. Amphiloma Fr. 1825) not cited; Art. 41.8(d) (Shenzhen).
Type species: Pectenia plumbea (Lightf.) P.M. Jørg., L. Lindblom, Wedin & S. Ekman
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Pectenia
