Xenophoma was established based on phylogenetic analysis using LSU and ITS by Trakunyingcharoen et al. (2014) to accommodate the type species Xenophoma puncteliae which originally described as Phoma puncteliae Diederich & Lawrey (Lawrey et al. 2012, Trakunyingcharoen et al. 2014). The type is the only lichenicolous species, and another species X. icrospore Magaña-Dueñas, Stchigel & Cano-Lira was found on plant debris in freshwater in Spain (Magaña-Dueñas et al. 2021). This genus is characterized by irregular to cauliflower-shaped conidiomata with uni- to multilocular, hyaline conidiogenous cells with ampulliform and solitary, hyaline conidia with guttulate and subspherical to ellipsoid shape (Trakunyingcharoen et al. 2014).
Type species: Xenophoma puncteliae (Diederich & Lawrey) Crous & Trakun.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Xenophoma
