Classification: Xylariaceae, XylarialesXylariomycetidaeSordariomycetesPezizomycotinaAscomycota, Fungi

Whalleya species have conspicuous, bipartite, stromata and asci with a J+, apical ring, and dark, ellipsoidal ascospores and has scolecosporous conidia, similar to lopadostomaceous species (Rogers et al. 1997). Based on both xylariaceous and lopadostomaceous morphological affinities, Maharachchikumbura et al. (2016b) placed the genus in Xylariales incertae sedis. However, based on recent phylogenetic studies, the genus is accommodated in Lopadostomataceae (Daranagama et al. 2018Wendt et al. 2018).

Type species: Whalleya microplaca (Berk. & M.A. Curtis) J.D. Rogers, Y.M. Ju & F. San Martín.

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Whalleya.
