Wernerella was established by Navarro-Rosinés et al. (1996a) to accommodate the non-lichenized lichenicolous fungus, W. maheui, which was combined from Leptosphaeria maheui Werner. This species grows on the hymenium of several Rinodina species. Wernerella is characterized by its colourless vegetative hyphae, consistently immersed in the hymenium of the host, with a wall that is colorless to pale brown and never emerges to the surface of the host (Navarro-Rosinés et al. 1996a). Another lichenicolous species of the genus is Wernerella acarosporae, growing on Acarospora, which was introduced by Etayo (2010c). This species is different from W. maheui by the colonizing the thallus of Acarospora instead of the hymenium of Rinodina, the erumpent ascomata, the thicker paraphyses with guttules inside, and the uniseptate spores with a thin wall (Etayo 2010c).
Type species: Wernerella maheui (Werner) Navarro-Rosinés, Cl. Roux & Giralt
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Wernerella
