Index Fungorum, Facesoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank.

Classification: Nectriaceae, Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.

Saprobic, plant pathogenic, on decaying herbaceous debris and wood, some are soil-borne. Sexual morph: Ascomata perithecial, astromatic or occurring a thin basal stroma, superficial, solitary or in small groups pyriform to obpyriform, apex acute, laterally pinched or not collapsing upon drying, orange to red, KOH+ dark red, surface smooth or hairy. Paraphyses lacking. Asci 8-spored, unitunicate, subcylindrical to clavate, with an apical ring. Ascospores 1-septate, ellipsoidal, fusiform or cylindrical to biconic, hyaline, smooth- or finely roughened-walled. Asexual morph: Hyphomycetous. Conidiophores sporodochial or synnematal, arising from a discreet stroma, sessile or short stipitate, unbranched, setose. Setae occurring around the margin of conidiomata, hyaline, usually arising from the stromatic base. Synnemata determinate, pale, composed of a stipe and a divergent capitulum of conidiophores with conidial mass. Stipe comprising of parallel hyphae. Conidiophores branching once or twice monochasial, 2-level verticillate, monoverticillate or irregularly biverticillate. Conidiogenous cells monophialidic, subulate, mostly with a conspicuous periclinal thickening, hyaline. Conidia ellipsoidal, ovate or oblong, aseptate, hyaline, occur in slimy white, yellow, orange or pink masses (adapted from Gräfenhan et al. 2011; Lombard et al. 2015).

Known distribution: Worldwide

Notes: Volutellonectria was considered as a synonym of Volutella by Lombard et al. (2015) on the basis of multi-locus phylogeny. Species previously recognised as Volutella buxi and Volutella pachysandricola, which are morphologically and phylogenetically distinct from species of Volutella sensu stricto, were transferred to Pseudonectria and Coccinonectria (Gräfenhan et al. 2011; Lombard et al. 2015). However, a comprehensive revision of the genus is required as much less research has been conducted (Gräfenhan et al. 2011).

Type species: Volutella ciliata (Alb. & Schwein.) Fr., Syst. mycol. (Lundae) 3(2): 467 (1832).

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Volutella.
