Verruculopsis was established by Navarro-Rosinés et al. (2007) for species resembling Verrucula, but distinguished by ascomata with a light brown basal part and a darker upper portion. It is characterized by perithecioid ascomata, globose or slightly elongated, with a completely paraplectenchymatous excipulum, light to medium brown except around the ostiole. The asci are broadly clavate, 8-spored, and bitunicate, with thin upper parts. Ascospores are colorless, globose to ellipsoid, typically non-septate, and filled with oil droplets (Navarro-Rosinés et al. 2007). Five species are recognized in this genus, including two lichens and three lichenicolous species. Phylogenetic analysis by Gueidan et al. (2009) indicated that Verruculopsis is sister to Placopyrenium within Verrucariaceae.
Type species: Verruculopsis poeltiana (Clauzade & Cl. Roux) Gueidan, Nav.-Ros. & Cl. Roux.
= Verrucaria poeltiana Clauzade & Cl. Roux.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Verruculopsis.
