Verrucoccum is the only genus of lichenicolous fungi so far known in Dictyosporiaceae, which was established by Atienza et al. (2021) and has two types of reproductive structures. The sexual morph is characterized by perithecioid ascomata, brown-black, subglobose with a rough surface, ostiolate; elongate-clavate to subcylindrical asci with a short ocular chamber, short-stalked, bitunicate, discharge fissitunicate, (4–)6–8-spored; brown ascospores, 1-septate. The asexual morph is characterized by pycnidial conidiomata immersed to sessile, arising in contiguous groups associated with ascomata, ostiolate, from hyaline when young to brown when mature, globose; Conidiogenous cells elliptic to ampulliform, hyaline, smooth, not proliferating, holoblastic; acrogenous conidia, ellipsoid, narrowed to a truncated base simple, pale brown to dark brown. In the phylogenetic analyses of Atienza et al. (2021), two phylogenetic trees respectively based on LSU-SSU sequence data and ITS of Verrucoccum coppinsii and V. spribil were presented. The result showed that Verrucoccum is closely related to species placed in Dictyosporiaceae (Atienza et al. 2021).

Type species: Verrucoccum coppinsii V. Atienza, D. Hawksw. & Pérez-Ort.

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Verrucoccum.
