Classification: Ascomycota genera incertae sedis, Fungi.
Vagnia was introduced by Hawksworth et al. (1997a) to describe the lichenicolous species V. cirriformis, which occurs on the thalli of Peltigera. The genus is distinguished by its lichenicolous lifestyle and unique morphological characteristics. Its conidiomata are solitary, cupulate to doliiform, dark brown in color but appear white due to superficial hairs, and feature a conspicuous black, columnar cirrus of conidia extending above the structure. The conidiomatal wall is composed of irregularly interwoven brown hyphae, with 0–1-septate, flexuous hairs. Conidiophores are simple or 1–3-branched, hyaline, and give rise to cylindrical, hyaline conidiogenous cells. The conidia are enteroblastic, bacilliform, and hyaline, but they aggregate in the cirrus to appear olive to dark green or black (Hawksworth et al. 1997a).
Due to the lack of molecular data, the phylogenetic position of Vagnia remains uncertain. It is currently classified within Ascomycota genera incertae sedis, pending further study (Hyde et al. 2024).
Type species: Vagnia cirriformis D. Hawksw. & Miądl. (Hawksworth et al. 1997a).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Vagnia.
