Classification: Lecanorales genera incertae sedis, Lecanoromycetidae, Lecanoromycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
Umushamyces was introduced by Etayo et al. (2008c) to accommodate the type species U. kuturnus, which grows on Coccotrema cucurbitula. The genus is characterized by simple or coalescent apothecia that are brown to black, convex to subspherical, and rounded or irregular when coalescent. The proper excipulum consists of branched, anastomosing, hyaline hyphae. The hymenium is hyaline or orange in its upper part, staining I+ brown and KI+ blue, with branched and anastomosing paraphyses. The asci are clavate, of the Biatora or Bacidia type, and eight-spored. The ascospores are hyaline, ellipsoidal, (0) 1-septate, straight or slightly curved, typically containing two oil droplets per cell. Zhurbenko (2023c) introduced a second species, Umushamyces wedinii, which grows on Bunodophoron ramuliferum. Two species are recognized within this genus, but no sequence data are available in GenBank, leaving its phylogenetic status unclear.
Type species: Umushamyces kuturnus Etayo, on Coccotrema cucurbitula.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Umushamyces.
