Troposporella was introduced and described by Karsten (1892) with T. fumosa as the type species based on its morphological data, such as holoblastic, helicoid conidia from sporodochial conidiomata. Troposporella monospora and T. rigidospora are currently known as Slimacomyces and Troposporopsis, respectively (Minter 1986; Whitton et al. 1999). Additionally, based on Rao’s description and photographs, we have excluded T. hyalospora from Troposporella, and suggest transferring it to the genus Helicoma (Rao 1964). Currently, Troposporella comprises five species: T. fumosa, T. guttulate, T. latifilum, T. monilipes and T. olivaceum, based on their morphology and phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, and LSU sequence data (Karsten 1892; Linder 1929; Tsui and Berbee 2010). Troposporella shares similarities with Helicoma by having helicoid and septate conidia. However, Troposporella has frequently branched conidiophores that form punctiform conidiomata on natural substrata and do not secede readily conidia. In contrast, the conidiophores of Helicoma are rarely branched. often solitary and possess conidia that secede readily (Rao 1964; Tsui and Berbee 2010; Lu et al. 2023b).
