Classification: Nectriaceae, Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
Saprobic on bark of recently died, dying or diseased trees, sometimes on rotting roots; plant pathogenic, often causing small cankers. Sexual morph: Ascomata perithecial, solitary to gregarious, astromatic and superficial on the substrate, or seated on an immersed inconspicuous stroma, globose, subglobose, or pyriform to elongated, orange to red, with a prominently darkened papilla or darkly pigmented apex, surface smooth or rugulose, without hairs or appendages. Peridium of two strata: outer stratum of thick-walled, pigmented cells forming a textura epidermoidea; inner stratum of elongate, hyaline, thin-walled cells, becoming thinner towards the centrum. Paraphyses lacking. Asci 8-spored, cylindrical to narrowly clavate, with an apical ring. Ascospores uniseriate, ellipsoidal to fusoid, 1-septate, hyaline, becoming pigmented with age, smooth-walled or finely spinulose or striate. Asexual morph: Cylindrocarpon-like. Sporodochia not formed. Conidiophores mononematous, septate, irregularly branched, hyaline, bearing 1–3 phialides at the apex or reduced to lateral phialides. Conidiogenous cells monophialidic, cylindrical or slightly swollen, tapering towards the apex, periclinal thickening evident, with a flared collarettes, usually forming macroconidia. Microconidia rare. Macroconidia subcylindrical to slightly fusoid, curved, broadest at upper third, (3–)5–7(–9)-septate, with rounded ends or flattened at the basal cell. Chlamydospores undetermined (adapted from Chaverri et al. 2011; Crous et al. 2021).
Known distribution: Cosmopolitan, mostly in tropical and subtropical areas (Chaverri et al. 2011)
Notes: Chaverri et al. (2011) established Thelonectria to include species in the former Neonectria mammoidea– and Neonectria veuillotiana-groups.
Type species: Thelonectria discophora (Mont.) P. Chaverri & Salgado, in Chaverri et al., Stud. Mycol. 68: 76 (2011).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Thelonectria.
