Ascomata apothecial or truffle-like, apothecia epigeous, cupulate, truffles hypogeous, bladder-like. Ectal excipulum when present composed of globose cells. Medullary excipulum when present composed of cells of textura intricate. Asci operculate to sub-operculate or indehiscence, amyloid or non-amyloid, cylindrical, 8-spored. Ascospores globose to ellipsoid, guttulate. Paraphyses filiform, septate, branched when present.
