Index Fungorum, Faceoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank, Fig 1.
Classification: Incertae sedis, Xylariales, Xylariomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
Etymology: The name refers to its close affinity with the genus “Anthostomella”.
Saprobic on palms. Sexual morph Ascomata immersed, slightly erumpent, solitary to gregarious, visible as blackened, raised, brown to black domes on the host surface, subglobose, clypeate. Peridium composed of several layers of thick-walled brown cells arranged in textura angularis. Paraphyses hypha-like, flexuose, numerous and septate, embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, unitunicate, cylindrical, short-pedicellate to subsessile, apically rounded, with a J+, wedge-shaped, subapical ring. Ascospores uniseriate or overlapping uniseriate, inequilaterally ellipsoidal, hyaline to brown, unicellular, wall verrucose when senescent, surrounded by a distinct gelatinous sheath, germ slit straight, extending over the full length, ventral, or lateral. Asexual morph Undetermined.
Notes: In the present study, two of our anthostomella-like strains formed a distinct clade and apparent unstable phylogenetic position within Xylariales. We therefore propose a new genus Subanthostomella to accommodate them. Subanthostomella is characterized by the ascomata with a black clypeus, cylindrical asci with a J+ wedge-shaped subapical ring, and ellipsoidal, hyaline to brown ascospores with straight germ slit and surrounded by a thick gelatinous sheath.
Type species: Subanthostomella palmae S.N. Zhang, K.D. Hyde & Jian K. Liu.
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Subanthostomella.
