Classification: Nectriaceae, Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.

Fungicolous, mycoparasitic, on stromata of ascomycetes. Sexual morph: Ascomata 150–350 μm high, perithecial, stromatic gregarious, arrange in groups up to 50 (–80), subglobose, pyriform, obpyriform to subcylindrical, having a rounded or broad, circular, flat disc on a venter-like neck, not collapsing or laterally collapsing upon drying, ostiolate, surface smooth or sometimes slightly roughened, usually shiny, pale yellow, orange-red, orange-brown, or pale to dark red, KOH+ dark red to purple, yellow in lactic acid. Stromata hyphal or subiculum-like, thin, whitish or yellow. Peridium composed of two strata. Paraphyses filamentous to narrowly moniliform. Asci 8-spored, unitunicate, cylindrical to clavate, short pedicellate, apex simple or with a J- apical ring or a faint ring-like apical thickening. Ascospores uniseriate, biseriate or irregularly disposed, hyaline or yellow to pale brown, 1-septate, cylindrical to allantoid or ellipsoidal, guttulate, smooth-walled, tuberculate or faintly spinulose. Asexual morph: Hyphomycetous. Conidiophores initially formed mostly as unbranched phialides on somatic hyphae, sometimes loosely branched, occasionally forming small sporodochia. Phialides monophialidic, cylindrical to subcylindrical, often with a visible collarette, giving rise to two types of conidia. Microconidia sparse, allantoid to lunulate, curved, aseptate, produced in wet heads. Macroconidia orange in mass, subcylindrical or curved, falcate, 0–3-septate, apex narrower than base, apical cell blunt or hooked, basal cell not or scarcely pedicellate (adapted from Höhnel 1915; Gräfenhan et al. 2011; Lombard et al. 2015).

Known distribution: Austria, Germany, UK, Switzerland (Gräfenhan et al. 2011), China (Zeng et al. 2020), France (Lechat et al. 2021).

Notes: Stylonectria species are considered as host-specific taxa (Gräfenhan et al. 2011). They are generally associated with the members of Diaporthales (Hapalocystis bicaudata Melanconis spodiaea, Melogramma bulliardi,) or other ascomycetes such as Eutypella and Diplodia species. Stylonectria is recognized with eight species (Gräfenhan et al. 2011; Zeng et al. 2020, Lechat et al. 2021).

Type species: Stylonectria applanata Höhn., Sber. Akad. Wiss. Wien, Math.-naturw. Kl., Abt. 1 124: 52 (1915).

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Stylonectria.
