Index Fungorum, Facesoffungi, MycoBank, GenBank.
Classification: Stromatonectriaceae, Hypocreales, Hypocreomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
Saprobic, weak plant pathogenic, on woody substrates. Stromata pulvinate, erumpent from bark, variable in shape and colour, yellow over orange to red or purple, KOH-. Sexual morph: Ascomata perithecial, immersed or superficial, crowded atop the stroma surface, spheroid, soft-textured, KOH-. Hamathecium consisting exclusively of periphyses. Paraphyses present. Asci 8-spored, unitunicate, clavate or fusoid, lacking an apical ring. Ascospores bi-seriate, ellipsoid, oblong or fusoid, 1-septate, hyaline, yellowish or rosy, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Conidiomata gyrostroma-like, pycnidial, occurring on the surface of stroma, semiglobose or pulvinate, multi-loculate, short hairs present on the surface. Conidiogenous cells phyalidic. Phyalides subulate or narrowly lageniform. Conidia aseptate, cylindrical or allantoid, hyaline, smooth-walled (adapted from Jaklitsch and Voglmayr 2011).
Known distribution: Austria (Jaklitsch and Voglmayr 2011), China (Zhou et al. 2018), Ukraine (Prylutskyi et al. 2017; Khudych 2021)
Notes: Jaklitsch and Voglmayr (2011) designated the monotypic genus Stromatonectria based on Myrmaeciella caraganae. Stromatonectria has KOH-negative stromata and ascomata, which is typical of Bionectriaceae, and hypocrea-like stroma and nectria-like centrum (Jaklitsch and Voglmayr 2011). Jaklitsch and Voglmayr (2011) accepted Stromatonectria in Bionectriaceae based on LSU phylogeny. Combined gene analysis revealed that Stromatonectria is not related to Bionectriaceae and distinct (Perera RH et al. 2023).
Type species: Stromatonectria caraganae (Höhn.) Jaklitsch & Voglmayr, Mycologia 103(2): 435 (2011).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Stromatonectria.
