Classification: Micropeltidaceae, Microthyriales, Incertae sedis, Dothideomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi
Epiphytic on living leaves appearing as black dots. Superficial hyphae hyaline, hard to detect. Sexual morph: Thyriothecium superficial, black, solitary, subdense, gregarious, flattened, circular, dimidiate, papillate, with a circular central ostiole. Upper wall blackish green, membranous, comprising overlapping, compact, pseudoparenchymatous hyphae with textura intricata, lack of basal layer. Hamathecium comprising of filamentous, hyaline, somewhat branched, septate pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, cylindrical to fusoid. Ascospores cylindrical, 2–4-septate, constricted at septa, hyaline, head cell longer and larger than others. Asexual morph: Undetermined (Zeng et al. 2019).
Notes: Batista et al. (1963a) introduced Stomiopeltopsis using the type species of S. linacearum. The second species of Stomiopeltopsis nolinae was introduced by Ramaley (2002) with its asexual morph of Parvosympodium nolinae. Stomiopeltopsis is morphologically similar to other genera of Micropeltidaceae in having greenish upper wall, however, it differs from 3–4-sepatae ascospores. Zeng et al. (2019) provided the first sequence data while adding third species for this genus. According to the multigene phylogeny (LSU and ITS) Stomiopeltopsis forms an independent lineage between Scolecopeltidium and Micropeltis with 97% for ML BS or 0.90 for BY PP support.
Type species: Stomiopeltopsis linacearum Bat. & Cavalc. 1963
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Stomiopeltopsis.
Figure 1 – Phylogenetic tree generated from maximum likelihood analysis based on LSU and ITS sequence data for 273 strains representing epifoliar fungal species in Dothideomycetes, Eurotiomycetes, Lecanoromycetes and Sordariomycetes. Armillaria mellea (GLM 45831) was used as the outgroup taxon. The tree topology of the maximum-like-lihood analysis is similar to the Bayesian analysis. Bootstrap support values for maximum likelihood (ML) equal to or greater than 90% are given above or below the nodes. Branches with Bayesian poste- rior probabilities (BPP) equal to or higher than 0.90 are given above or below the nodes. The hyphen (“–”) indicates a value lower than 90% for ML BS or 0.90 for BY PP. Ex-type, holotype and ex-epitype strains are in bold. Epifoliar taxa of each clades are in red
