Classification: Stictographaceae, Asterinales, Dothideomycetes orders incertae sedis, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi.
Stictographa was originally introduced by Mudd (1861) for a lichenized species with lirelliform ascomata and an exciple continuous below the hymenium. The type Stictographa lentiginose is combined from Opegrapha lentiginosea which was originally described as a lichenized species, but it is now generally accepted as being a lichenicolous fungus, confined to Phaeographis dendritica (Ertz et al. 2015a). Redinger (1938) and Sanderson et al. (2009) also gave descriptions and illustrations of this species. This genus is characterized by a lichenicolous life-style; black, simple to occasionally shortly branched lirelliform ascomata; a slit-like disc; a well-developed, brownish black, K– (brownish pigment disappears) exciple continuous below the hymenium; a hyaline hymenium, I+ and K/I+ blue turning orange; mainly simple paraphyses; periphyses developing from the inner excipular layer; clavate, thick-walled (upper part), asci with a distinct ocular chamber, I–, K/I–; and 1-septate, hyaline then brown ascospores (Ertz et al. 2015a). Another lichenicolous is Stictographa dirinariicola which is different from the type species S. lentiginosa by smaller ascomata, (100–150 × 75–100 μm vs. 100–500 × 100 –200 μm), larger asci (9–47 × 15–18 μm vs. 25–35 × 8–12.5 μm), and larger ascospores (15.0–17.8 × 6.3–7.8 μm vs. 10–13.5 × 5–7.5 μm). In addition, the lichenicolous habitat is Dirinaria (Diederich et al. 2017b).
Type species: Stictographa lentiginosa (Lyell ex Leight.) Mudd
