Stachybotryaceae was introduced by Crous et al. (2014) to accommodate Myrothecium, Peethamabra and Stachybotrys, which are saprobes or pathogens on plants and are commonly isolated from soil. Lombard et al. (2016) revisited the family and accepted 33 genera based on morphology and LSU, ITS, rpb2, cmda, tef1-α and tub2 sequence data. There are 39 genera accepted in Stachybotryaceae (Hyde et al. 2020). 

Type genus: Stachybotrys Corda, Icon. fung. (Prague) 1: 21 (1837).

Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Stachybotryaceae.
