Notes: Spiroplana was established by Voglmayr et al. (2011), and typified by S. centripeta based on morphology and phylogenetic analyses of the combined ITS and LSU sequence data.Currently, Spiroplana comprises only one pathogenic fungal species, S. centripeta, isolated from Philadelphus schrenkii and Deutzia parviflora in Korea (Voglmayr et al. 2011). Spiroplana is characterized by mononematous, septate conidiophores, holoblastic conidiogenous cells, and irregularly globose to elongated, laterally flattened conidia, with branched, tightly spirally interwoven, septate conidial filaments (Voglmayr et al. 2011). Spiroplana is morphologically similar to Spirosphaera in having coiled, branched, tightly interwoven conidial filaments. However, the conidia of Spiroplana differ from those of Spirosphaera by being laterally flattened, and by the consistently centripetal growth of the daughter filaments (Beverwijk 1953; Voglmayr et al. 2011). Additionally, phylogenetic analyses revealed that the type strains of Spiroplana and Spirosphaera are distributed in different orders and classes, with Spiroplana in Pleosporales (Dothideomycetes), and Spirosphaera in Helotiales (Leotiomycetes) (Voglmayr et al. 2011).
