Classification: Sordariomycetidae, Sordariomycetes, Pezizomycotina, Ascomycota, Fungi
Notes: Sordariales was established by Hawksworth and Eriksson (1986). Sordariales species have membraneous or coriaceous ascomata, and hyaline or brown ascospores often with appendages or sheaths (Huhndorf et al. 2004; Zhang et al. 2006; Kruys et al. 2015; Maharachchikumbura et al. 2016a; Hyde et al. 2020c). Sordariales has wide distribution worldwide and most species either grow on dung or decaying substrata, such as wood or are aquatic growing on submerged wood (Zhang et al. 2006; Maharachchikumbura et al. 2016a). The divergence time for Sordariales is estimated at 128 MYA and currently there are four families (Chaetomiaceae, Podosporaceae, Lasiosphaeriaceae and Sordariaceae) and 89 genera in this order (Hyde et al. 2020c).
Type family: Sordariaceae G. Winter [as ‘Sordarieae‘], Rabenh. Krypt.-Fl., Edn 2 (Leipzig) 1.2: 162 (1885).
Other accepted species: Species Fungorum – search Sordariales.
